In particular His Son, the Holy Spirit and the examples of the lives of the saints. On the more human level, there were several Priests and a permanent deacon that helped me along on my journey. What would you say to a young man who thinks he may have a vocation: Pray. Pray consistently, devoutly, and confidently to the Lord for the grace of true discernment and offer your vocation to Mary (whether it be priestly or lay). Pray the rosary daily. Don't wait for signs or surety: I didn't receive confirmation of the call until after I entered seminary for discernment. Maintain a habit of spiritual reading. Endure your daily crosses patiently, without complaining, and always in solidarity with Christ. Practice Mental Prayer (conversation with God). The Mass is the source of Life for any Catholic, but most especially for the priest. Frequent confession should always accompany Mass attendance. Also, spend time preparing before Mass and giving thanks after Mass. One of the turning points in my vocation was after I spent time in thanksgiving for the gift of the Lord's sacrifice of the Mass. It is that sacrifice we are called to live, and everything the priest does begins and ends with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Favorite Scripture passage and why: My favorite scripture passage is the Annunciation scene: the angel’s greeting, Mary’s response, the Incarnation. Even Mary’s words concerning her commitment to consecrated virginity are very meaningful to me as one who is to be consecrated to celibacy. I often repeat to myself Mary’s response: “Thy will be done.” Favorite Saint and why: Mary has been a constant companion and guide on my spiritual journey. My first real prayers were to her, and since then my most meaningful encounters with her Son were at her side. The rosary, the Ave, the miraculous medal, and her scapular, have all been daily weapons in my spiritual warfare. It was only after I consecrated my then unknown vocation to her that I received my call to the priesthood of Jesus Christ. I know that she will ever bring me closer to her Son during, god-willing, my priesthood. The help of my guardian angel has also been invaluable. |
