Every Catholic Called to Encourage Vocations, says Pope PDF Print E-mail

The vitality of the Church depends on individual Catholics fostering vocations in their homes and parishes, the Pope says in his annual message for the May 15 World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

“It is essential that every local Church become more sensitive and attentive to the pastoral care of vocations,” the Pope writes in his new statement issued by the Vatican on Feb. 10.

He speaks of the role of the Church in helping children and young people to grow in a real friendship with Jesus, to increase their familiarity with the Scriptures, to understand the truth of his message and to be generous in creating relationships with others.

The theme of this year’s prayer for vocations day is “Proposing Vocations in the Local Church.” The Pope says this “means having the courage, through an attentive and suitable concern for vocations, to point out this challenging way of following Christ which, because it is so rich in meaning, is capable of engaging the whole of one’s life.”

Answering Jesus' call of “Follow me!” is “no less challenging” today than it was for the disciples 2,000 years ago, says the Pope.

“It means learning to keep our gaze fixed on Jesus, growing close to him, listening to his word and encountering him in the sacraments” and “learning to conform our will to his.”

The Church is called to protect and love the gift of God's call to people to share in his mission and serve as ordained ministers and consecrated religious, he says.

“Particularly in these times, when the voice of the Lord seems to be drowned out by 'other voices' and his invitation to follow him by the gift of one’s own life may seem too difficult, every Christian community, every member of the Church, needs to consciously feel responsible for promoting vocations.”

According to a report from the U.S. bishops, there are currently 5,131 men enrolled in the U.S. seminaries. The number is up from 4,973 in 2009.

The Pope urges the faithful to take every opportunity to develop vocations. “Every moment” in Church community life from catechesis to prayer and pilgrimages can be “a precious opportunity for awakening in the people of God ... a sense of belonging to the Church and of responsibility for answering the call to priesthood and to religious life by a free and informed decision,” he says.

“The ability to foster vocations,” Pope Benedict concludes, “is a hallmark of the vitality of a local Church.”

Latest News from the Office of Vocations PDF Print E-mail

Dear All,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer and are gearing up for the start of a new school year! With the summer ending and our seminarians getting ready to start back to seminary, our office will resume our monthly updates.

Most importantly, we have 8 new seminarians joining us this year for a total group of 21! Attached is a complete list of their names, year at the seminary and birthdates. Profiles and pictures are now posted to the webpage (www.raleighvocations.org). The seminarians are starting their new school year this week and must report to St. Charles Seminary on Wednesday, August 25th. We ask that you continue to pray for our seminarians by name and to especially remember Brian Wright who will be celebrating his birthday next month on September 11.

In other news from the office, our deanery vocation celebrations, which we have held for the past few years, are changing a little bit. Beginning in September, each Deanery will take turns to host a Vocation Celebration – one deanery each month. This celebration could be in the form of a Holy Hour, Mass, Prayer Service or anything else the Deanery decides on. Preceding each celebration will be two dinners where invited men and women (high school age and older) can speak with Priests and Women Religious to learn about their lives and the discernment process and ask questions. Though the dinners are by invitation from Priests and Women Religious, if you know of a young man or woman who would be a good candidate for the Priesthood or Religious Life, please pass the name on to your pastor. The dinners are limited but the celebration is open to all and we hope to have a strong turnout, so please encourage your parishioners to come!

Our first Deanery Celebration will be in Raleigh on Friday, September 10th. Our Lady of Lourdes Parish will be hosting a Mass for Vocations at 7:00pm in the church. The next few celebrations include:

October 8, 2010 – Piedmont Deanery
November 19, 2010 – Tar River Deanery
December 3, 2010 – Fayetteville Deanery

As details are settled about the other celebrations, I will make sure to send them out via email to you all. Please encourage people to attend the celebration and pass on any names to your pastor. Later this week, we will also resume posting our listing of parish and school First Friday events. Please review the listing for your parish/school and let me know what corrections need to be made. We hope to post it at the end of this week.

And lastly, remember to mark your calendars for the Liaison Retreat Day on Saturday, October 30th at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish! More details will come as it gets closer, but we hope it will be an informative and prayerful day!

Thank you for your continued support of our office! We are excited to begin a new school year and are looking forward to hearing about the vocations events going on in your parishes and schools!

In Christ,

Sara Edwards
